Cheerleading, as sport, could impede Title IX

You can bet the pending federal case involving Quinnipiac University is going to shake up college athletics. A federal judge heard final arguments Friday in a case that may determine whether cheerleading is a sport.
The Quinnipiac volleyball team has been pressing this case since the university eliminated its team in order to add a competitive cheer [...]

Utah governor doesn’t understand sports economics

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert says taxpayers finally are getting a big return on their investment now that the Utes have joined the Pac-12.
“We the taxpayers have invested a lot of money into this institution,” said Gov. Herbert. “This shows we’re getting a significant return.
“It’s a red-letter day,” he added.

Dumb 101: Tennessee attorney general says Vols can restrict media access

Tennessee’s attorney general says his state’s universities have the right to put restrictions and conditions on coverage of athletic events.
Perhaps, but I have very little regard for the AG’s opinions. After all, he is really part of the state university system being another state employee.

What are sports worth on your campus?

You’re a school board member for a small district that is in dire financial shape – not because the school district is inept but because the state refuses to send funds already promised. In fact, the governor proposes cutting more than $1 billion from next year’s budget.
At this rate, the school district may be able [...]

College staffs quietly cover signing day

Even though college football recruiting is overhyped, fans love it.
Even though these players have not played a down, fans want to know which school snagged the best recruits.
So that’s what we do, offer information about signed players. And fans eat it up, reading even one-sentence updates from newspapers by the tens of thousands in Atlanta, [...]

Duke staff seeks reason Duquesne cut 4 sports

The Duquesne Duke does a solid job illustrating the real cost of eliminating four men’s sports teams at the Pittsburgh university.
Duquesne is typically evasive, calling the reduction a difficult but ’strategically important’ decision, according to the school’s president. The athletic director offers an equally ambiguous reason: “Focusing on and strengthening a core group of sports [...]
