NBA players overestimate their value

The National Basketball Players Association says it plans to dissolve the union in order to negotiate through antitrust suits, claiming the collective bargaining process has broken down. The players union, says NBPA executive director Billy Hunter, refuses to back down: “The players feel they’re not prepared to accept any ultimatum. We think it’s extremely unfair [...]

Title IX needed now more than ever

A writer for Boise State’s Arbiter, one of the better college newspapers in the country, is taking a regressive stance on gender equity, essentially saying that Title IX is antiquated.
To be fair, this writer is a student journalist trying to learn her craft. However, the column fell flat because this reporter clearly did not do the [...]

A $1 mil buyout is a big deal

So I just heard on ESPN how Michigan should buy out Les Miles‘ contract at Louisiana State since the cost is only $1.25 million.  Is this where we are in the world right now, where sports journalists think nothing of colleges wasting money that could, instead, be used to run several academic departments, hire 20-40 [...]

Utah governor doesn’t understand sports economics

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert says taxpayers finally are getting a big return on their investment now that the Utes have joined the Pac-12.
“We the taxpayers have invested a lot of money into this institution,” said Gov. Herbert. “This shows we’re getting a significant return.
“It’s a red-letter day,” he added.
Really? The state spends far more on football [...]

Writers shouldn’t vote for Hall, BCS champ

I’ll say it again – journalists should not be part of the news; instead, we should be reporting the news. Yet, sports writers have been doing just that, making news during the past two days – first, for their votes on baseball’s Hall of Fame, and, second, for their decisions about BCS champ.
Sure, the BCS [...]

Sports reporting will survive Woods’ affair

Most sports fans get far more excited about fantasy leagues and analysis than by an athlete’s personal fantasies. Yet, Mitch Albom believes sports journalism is devolving into gossip, rumor and paparazzi.
Seems like a lot of people are angered by how Tiger Woods has been treated in the media during the past month. Woods’ affairs have [...]

Ban composite bats, require facemasks

OK, so when is someone going to finally step up and admit that using composite bats is a mistake?
When someone dies? That will happen soon, believe me. Especially if coaches don’t force players to wear face masks, which players dismiss as uncool even though they can save their lives. You’ll find travel softball players using these [...]

Some youth coaches suck

Not sure why some coaches need to play mind games with young athletes. But some do, trying to create doubt or to diminish confidence in another team’s players. At the youth level, these coaches should be dismissed for their disgusting behavior.
My daughter faced a coach like this during a middle school regional volleyball tournament this [...]

Good riddance, Chief

Students are livid. Alumni are furious. Fans are so angry they are peppering websites with angry messages. The University should be ashamed for bowing to pressure from the NCAA, they write.
Now, people all over Illinois are stunned and deflated as they prepare to say good-bye to the Chief, the school’s American Indian mascot for the [...]

Sports need gay superstar

Sports need a gay role model, if only so we can stop debating something so silly as one’s sexuality. And so we can stop hearing idiots like Tim Hardaway spew hateful messages.
I wish someone like Peyton Manning were gay. He could pull out the cheesy mustache he wore in those Sprint commercials, offer some support [...]
