Sports Reporter (Writer/photographer) – Stars and Stripes, the independent daily newspaper devoted to covering the U.S. military overseas, is seeking an enthusiastic sports reporter to cover Europe. The reporter is based in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and responsible for covering primarily high school sports at U.S. military-run schools around Europe, but also other military-related sports in Europe. Reporter must have in-depth knowledge and understanding of all forms of sports – American and European. The reporter will be expected to cover games, interview athletes, coaches and parents, both in person and on the phone, as well as cull agate and writer roundups from games across the region. The reporter also will write features on players, school programs and other sports-related topics. That requires developing good relationships with school coaches, who often are the primary source of game information, including scores, key players and key plays, as well as key to access to high school athletes. Incumbent must be able to work multiple stories on deadline, in addition to compiling accurate agate and filing timely updates for the website. Reporter may also be required to learn how to post scores, blogs and stories to the web. Incumbent also will be required to help coordinate and plan sports coverage, as well as occasionally edit sports copy from other reporters who may not have the same level of sports expertise. Working out of the European headquarters office, the incumbent may also be asked to file news stories during off seasons. Incumbent must be comfortable filing both for the print editions of the paper, as well as filing potentially multiple leads on a story for the 24-hour web and digital components of Stripes. Incumbent is also expected to provide photos whenever possible with stories and, when appropriate, video as supplemental digital content. Incumbent also must be comfortable working with photographers and collaborating with other reporters. Incumbent develops and maintains sources in and pertaining to the coverage area and subject. Incumbent will be expected to travel for coverage. Hours can be long and include weekends requiring flexibility in scheduling off days and vacation.
